The vision is of a creative community space where inspiration and collaboration are centre. The intention is to hold the space with care and purpose to enable versatility and encourage possibility.
Weekly group such as; choir, improv drama, breath work and yoga, take place here along with exhibitions, gigs, meetings, private gatherings, supper clubs, shows, markets and more. We even have an in-house Vidal Sassoon hairdresser here on a Monday.
The Angel Space is extremely versatile and easily transformed into a venue for performance, show casing, dinner parties, weddings, workshops and so much.
See gallery for more of a sense of the space.
We look forward to hearing how we can support you with your projects and ideas.
The history of The Angel is ingrained in Totnes' past. It is a part of the towns original surrounding wall making it one of the town's oldest buildings.
The lower half of the building existed as the town stables along with what is now the carpark at the back. Both were part of the primary public house in Totnes called The Gate House Inn. This is now the site of The Totnes Language School.
The Gate House Inn was later renamed The Angel Inn, which of cause we have been very chuffed to discover.
The hayloft was added later, you can see from the road where the doors would have been.
In more recent history, the building was the studio of local artists Kelvin Burr, Sarah King with Dan Wheatley and Mike Boyer joining them briefly.
Laurie and Katie took over from Kelvin, transforming the space into a yoga studio, art gallery and public venue.
In March 2020, Nicky Bell took on The Angel and April 2022-2025 Claire Limberg joined Nicky as co-director.
The Angel is an ever evolving creative space in the heart of our community.
This is what we know about The Angel to date. If you have any more information please do get in touch.
